Shawn Ryan distances himself from Tim Kennedy following Stolen Valor scandal

Popular military podcaster Shawn Ryan has taken decisive action to distance himself from former Green Beret Tim Kennedy following mounting allegations of stolen valor and false military claims. Ryan, host of one of the most successful military podcasts on the planet, recently updated his viral interview with Kennedy to reflect the ongoing controversy surrounding the former special forces operator.

The scandal erupted when a video surfaced from the American Warrior podcast, discovered by the Stolen Valor Instagram account, showing Kennedy claiming he possessed a Bronze Star with Valor. In the clip, Kennedy described receiving the award after allegedly engaging and neutralizing an enemy combatant while under fire. However, this claim, along with numerous others made during Kennedy‘s appearance on Ryan‘s show, has come under intense scrutiny from Kennedy‘s former teammates and military verification sources.

In a significant move that signals Ryan‘s stance on the matter, the podcaster completely overhauled the thumbnail and title of Kennedy‘s interview episode.

What originally appeared as a standard episode now bears the stark warning

“Under Investigation for Stolen Valor”

and identifies Kennedy as being

“under investigation for false Bronze Star with Valor claim.”

Ryan also added pointed disclaimer language to the episode description, stating:

“We take the issue of stolen valor seriously and we want to be clear. The false claims of one guest will not undermine the integrity of the many veterans who have joined us and shared their stories truthfully.”

The Kennedy interview had become particularly problematic due to several troubling claims made during the conversation. Kennedy alleged he used thermal imaging to engage non-combatants and claimed he engaged an 11-year-old child, taking the child’s weapon as a trophy. When Kennedy‘s former teammates were interviewed by other military podcasts, they categorically denied these incidents ever occurred, calling the stories complete fabrications.

Military analysts and commentators have praised Ryan‘s handling of the situation. By relabeling the episode while keeping it publicly available, Ryan has created what many consider a

“living record”

of Kennedy‘s claims while making clear his platform’s position on their veracity.

The scandal has also revealed additional questionable claims made by Kennedy, including assertions that he appears on

“countless target lists”

as a

“special forces sniper”

and various embellished profiles suggesting he held a Silver Star.

Ryan‘s decisive response demonstrates the serious consequences facing those who allegedly misrepresent military service, particularly when using prominent platforms to spread unverified claims.
