Pride FC Veteran Henry Miller Passed Away at 56

Henry Armstrong Miller, known professionally as Sentoryū Henri, was a Japanese-American sumo wrestler and mixed martial artist. The son of a Japanese mother and an African-American father, his middle name was given in honor of Neil Armstrong. Miller was born on the same day the Apollo 11 mission left Earth.

According to sources, Miller passed away on January 29, 2026. He breathed his last in a Tokyo hospital at the age of 56, following complications from lung disease.

Miller spent his early years on Yokota Air Base before moving to St. Louis, Missouri. He began wrestling in elementary school and qualified for state championships, although a high school knee injury ended his aspirations for professional football.

After graduating in 1987, Miller returned to Japan to pursue sumo wrestling. Competing under the shikona Sentoryū, he entered the professional sumo ranks in July 1988.

Miller faced injuries throughout his career, delaying his rise through the ranks. He reached the makushita division in 1991 and became a sekitori in November 1994, though he was briefly demoted. He eventually reached the makuuchi division, the highest in professional sumo, in July 2000.

He recorded notable victories over future stars, including a win against Asashōryū in 2000, and had multiple successes against Kotomitsuki. He retired in November 2003 following recurring injuries, having spent 20 tournaments as a sekitori, the longest such career by any wrestler from the contiguous United States.

Following his retirement from sumo, Miller transitioned to mixed martial arts and kickboxing. He debuted in Pride FC in 2004, recommended by Chiyotaikai Ryūji, and competed until 2013.

Across 23 MMA bouts, he secured six wins, including five by knockout and one by submission, with 16 losses and one no-contest. He also competed in kickboxing, earning one victory over former sekitori Wakashoyo in 2010. His final MMA match was in August 2013 against Kazuhiro Nakamura where he was stopped in the first round.
