Police officer wanted as a suspect in attempted murder of Leandro Lo surrenders, crowd gathers outside the station

The tragic passing of Leandro Lo has deeply shaken the jiu jitsu community. Lo was 33 at the time when a military police officer fired a gunshot into his forehead at a pagoda show at Club Sirio in Sao Paulo.

The name of the suspect was initially withheld but had made it online thanks to Combate which managed to get their hands on the police report.

Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo is a 1st Lieutenant of the Military Police of the State of São Paulo. He has been an active Policeman for over a decade.

Velozo taught self defense at one point during his tenure as a Police Officer. There are also unconfirmed reports that he was a purple belt in jiu jitsu.

The incident is currently treated as attempted murder. While multiple sources confirmed that Leandro Lo is brain dead neither the family nor the hospital confirmed death reports.

ESPN Brazil managed to get a confirmation that the suspect has surrendered and is being placed under arrest.

According to his police record, the lieutenant had already been involved in another scuffle 5 years ago. At the time, he was accused by other police of assault and contempt

Police lieutenant Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo, 30, who was sentenced to prison after being accused of shooting Lenadro Lo in the head, surrendered to internal affairs and is arrested. According to the delegate general of the Civil Police of São Paulo, Dr. Osvaldo Nico Gonçalves, “Henrique is in prison and will be presented in the seventeenth DP at Ipiranga. 

A crowd has gathered outside the facility where Velozo is being held. The crowd was chanting assassin and wanting retribution for the unjust murder of Leandro Lo.
