Nate Diaz’s teammate Chris Avila has found himself in yet another incident at a press conference before the bout. The incident occurred ahead of his co-main event bout against Paul Bamba at Misfits Boxing 006 in New Orleans.
The press conference was marred by drama as bottles and hot water were thrown during a heated exchange between the two’s teams.
Avila had been uncharacteristically quiet in the build-up to the match. He skipped the open workout and made only a brief appearance at the press conference.
As Bamba began to criticize Avila while sporting a custom-made t-shirt that referred to Avila as Diaz’s ‘waterboy’, their teams got into a heated argument.
Additionally, Bamba alleges that hot water was hurled at the members of his team while bottles were thrown between the two camps.
While speaking to YouTuber ‘FoxTheG’, Bamba said: “It’s just been awkward the whole time. He’s not even saying anything it’s mainly just his team doing weird stuff, throwing hot water on people, burning people, it’s weird we get to punch each other in the face on Friday so I don’t see what’s the rush.”
“I was walking and they crossed the street and came and threw coffee on me and it was awkward as hell. I didn’t want to get jumped, though, I don’t think they were promoting, I think they were just trying to assault people, who throws hot water on somebody? Cold water I get… One of the DAZN cameraman got burned, he’s on his way to the hospital.”
When Townley questioned if the actions of Avila’s side would jeopardize the match, Bamba said: “Normally it would, but I’m hoping that it doesn’t. That would be tight because I didn’t do s***, Chris also didn’t do s*** so I kind of feel like we should be good, I hope not, we’re not going to manifest that”.
Bamba has been out of action since September last year after a series of unfortunate bout cancellations, including one with Tommy Fury.
Due to the Brit’s failure to meet the lightweight limit for their bout in Dubai, Bamba withdrew and Fury competed in an exhibition match.
On the other hand, Avila has managed to turn his career around since switching from MMA to boxing at the end of 2021. Avila has won his last two bouts against Anthony Taylor and Dr Mike Varshavski.
Although Diaz is often seen as a member of Avila’s corner crew, he was not there for the brawl at yesterday’s news conference. He is anticipated to be there on the night of the bout. Currently, he is training for his next match against Jake Paul on August 5 in Dallas.
