Keith Lee has built his name reviewing food and weighing in on internet culture, but this week the influencer found himself at the center of a very different kind of story, one that had nothing to do with restaurants and everything to do with how close a routine night can come to catastrophe.
According to Lee’s own account, the incident happened around midnight on Interstate 67 in Texas. He was behind the wheel with his wife in the passenger seat and two others riding in the back. Traffic was moving normally until a car heading the wrong way appeared in oncoming headlights, aimed straight into the lane Lee was traveling in.
“I’m in the front seat driving, my wife in the passenger seat, Tony, Jaylen in the back seat. We on 67 headed home. It’s 12:00 at night. We in the left lane. We on the freeway,” Lee recalled.
He described the scene in detail: another car ahead of him, a sand truck to his right, a wall running alongside the road, and then the sudden reaction of the driver in front of him.
“The car in front of me start freaking out. I immediately go, ‘What’s that?’ He move out the way. There’s a car coming this way. Headlights on the freeway, 12:00 at night.”
Lee said his instinct took over in that instant.
“I go, ‘Jam.’ Swirl behind the sand truck. Get behind the sand truck. He drives right past me. It feel like a movie. It feel like slow motion.”
From there, he watched the wrong-way car continue past his vehicle and into the path of others behind him.
“I’m watching him drive past. There’s four cars behind me lined up pretty much. They like all staggered. He drive right into them. In my rearview, I see a car try to get out his way. The car go all the way across all four lanes trying to swirl back to gain control, slam right into a wall.”
Waking up the next morning, Lee learned the outcome. Local reporting indicated the wrong-way vehicle had been reported stolen out of Irving, and that its driver was described as intoxicated.
One person involved did not survive the crash. Lee summed up the news bluntly: “One unalived. Stolen car coming out of Irving. Intoxicated man drives directly into a car. He drove past me, y’all. I don’t know if you can hear me, but he drove right past me. I watched it.”
What followed was less a food review and more a public reflection. Lee framed the night as a message he felt compelled to share rather than keep to himself.
“If God wasn’t with me last night, I wouldn’t be here and I mean that wholeheartedly,” he said, adding that his family’s escape was, in his eyes, no accident of physics or timing. “If God wasn’t with me, I don’t know who was. My condolences go out to the family that lost their loved one.”
He acknowledged wrestling with whether to post about it at all before deciding the experience demanded to be spoken aloud.
“At first I wasn’t going to say nothing, but then when I woke up this morning I’m like, if you don’t give him the glory, if you don’t scream it from the rooftops, what is the purpose of you seeing the things that you see? If you experiencing the things that you experience with him. If you don’t glorify him. If you don’t tell somebody about him.”
The clip spread quickly, and not everyone received it the way Lee intended. Alongside messages of relief for his family’s safety, a chorus of commenters pushed back, questioning why his survival would be framed as divine favor when another family that same night was left grieving a father of two.
Lee, for his part, did not walk back his framing. He closed his message the way he opened it, insistent that gratitude was the only response he had.
“I’m thankful to be here and that’s not an understatement. I didn’t understand it yesterday. I woke up this morning overly grateful. It could have been so bad. God is amazing, man. God bless you. Have an amazing day. Y’all be safe.”
