MMA community rallies in support of Cain Velasquez after he shot at man accused of molesting underage relative

MMA and prowrestling communities were in shock when Cain Velasquez was arrested on Monday afternoon.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was arrested following a shooting near Monterey Highway and Bailey Avenue in Morgan Hill. The charges weren’t publicized at first – just that there was no bail. That sounded very serious – but the silver lining was that the victim of the shooting wasn’t in life danger.

Police have at first refused to clarify the circumstances of the shooting or a motive. Velasquez refused to give an interview from jail.

NBC Bay Area released the name of the victim as 42 year old Harry Eugene Goularte. Goularte had his own run in with law one week prior – he is facing one felony count of a lewd and lascivious act with a child.

According to the sources Goularte resides in a place that also houses a daycare business run by his mother. The alleged victim reportedly witnessed several other children be left alone with Goularte as well.

He denies any wrong doing. NBC Bay Area reports that court documents note that the alleged abuse on Velasquez’s family member may have happened “100 times.”. Goularte was out of jail and granted ‘supervised’ release in spite of objections from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.

Goularte wasn’t the only one in the car – his step father was with him in the car and he is the one that was wounded and taken to the hospital for non life threatening injuries.

Velasquez will be arraigned on Wednesday. He might be looking at more charges. Currently, Cain Velasquez is facing an attempted murder charge. Attempted murder is punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment. If a gun is used, the minimum sentence is four, five or seven years, dependent on prior convictions. MMA community rallied behind him upon hearing the circumstances off the case.
