Marc Maron Is Not Done Criticizing Joe Rogan

Comedian Marc Maron recently discussed Joe Rogan’s interviewing style and the criticism he has faced from the UFC commentator during an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show.

During the conversation, Friedland sarcastically explained how he had studied Rogan’s approach to interviewing guests, noting that his tendency to agree with them often encourages them to open up and speak more freely.

“I listened to Joe Rogan and he kind of agrees a lot. So the guest feels like they’re crushing. So he’s like kind of like so he gets a lot out of them,” Friedland said.

Maron agreed with the observation. Freidland then suggested that Rogan’s agreeable approach could make guests feel particularly convincing, regardless of the views they express.

“if I was on Rogan, I’d be like, I’m being the most convincing guy in the world right now,” Friedland said.

He then pointed to Rogan’s willingness to entertain vastly different perspectives. “He’ll have Bernie. He’ll be like, that’s awesome. And then he’ll have like a guy that says the Holocaust was not real, you know, come on. Who are we kidding with the Holocaust? And then he’ll be like, ‘That’s trippy, right?’ He’ll say it both times, right? That disarms the guest.”

He then contrasted Rogan’s personality with Maron’s, saying, “But then I listened to your show and I was like, you’re sufficiently honest about yourself where it like kind of prompts the guests to feel like they can be honest about themselves.”

Maron agreed and also revealed that Rogan had previously criticized him over his relationships with other comedians. Recalling the accusation, Maron said, “Joe Rogan like attacked me for that, too. Like I stopped being friends with any of my friends to become famous and sort of like, yeah because I’m not famous.”

Maron then talked about comedians making their own personality instead of hanging out in the shadows of another famous one.

Maron stated, “You can’t be part of someone’s you know, entourage. You can’t be part of somebody’s bus tour, you know, because like, how are you going to surface from that? Well, you got to do your own stuff.”
