Khamzat Chimaev, the undefeated UFC star making waves in the middleweight division, recently shed light on his next move. Following weight cutting complications, Chimaev has transitioned to the middleweight category, where he secured a significant victory over former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in a compelling bout last October.
Currently holding the 9th spot in the UFC middleweight rankings, Chimaev’s popularity and skill set have positioned him as a formidable contender in the division. Fans have eagerly anticipated when Chimaev would vie for the middleweight title he covets.
In a recent discussion, Chimaev addressed the possibility of facing Sean Strickland for the championship. Not only did he express agreement with the idea, but he also unveiled that the UFC has assured him a middleweight title bout against the victor of the Strickland vs Du Plessis matchup.
“100%. If he has the fight now… Du Plessis… If he (Strickland) wins against this guy, for sure we are going to fight. 100% should be. They promised me the fight. So now we are going to wait [to see] who’s winning the fight and then take the belt,” affirmed Chimaev.
The UFC middleweight championship clash between Sean Strickland and Dricus du Plessis is scheduled for January 20 at UFC 297, marking the first major UFC event of 2024. Despite holding the 9th position in the rankings, Chimaev’s guaranteed title shot aligns with the absence of available top contenders due to bookings and recent losses.
Chimaev’s journey to a middleweight title bout adds another layer of excitement to the division, with fans eagerly awaiting the outcome of Strickland vs Du Plessis to determine the next championship showdown.
