Kayla Harrison Reveals She Had 3 Surgeries in the Last 9 Months

Olympic gold medalist and MMA star Kayla Harrison has revealed the significant physical challenges she’s facing after decades of elite competition. “I’ve had three surgeries in the last 9 months. Before this period I hadn’t had surgery in 10 years,” Harrison disclosed in a candid podcast. The fighter’s body appears to be sending her a clear message: “Obviously my body is getting to a point where it’s like ‘Hey dude, you’ve been doing this since you were 12. Let’s wrap it up.'”

Passion Persists Despite Pain

Despite the mounting physical challenges, Harrison’s love for the sport remains undiminished. “I just love it so much. I love training, I love competing, I love fighting. I love fighting 10 times more than I ever loved judo and it’s so hard to walk away,” she expressed. This dedication to MMA represents a significant evolution from her judo career, where she first made her mark in combat sports.

From Judo to MMA: A Champion’s Journey

Harrison’s path to MMA was heavily influenced by former UFC champion Ronda Rousey. “Dude she’s… I can’t knock her, she’s the reason I started MMA,” Harrison acknowledged. Their relationship dates back to their early days in Boston, where they were roommates and training partners. Harrison even served as Rousey’s training partner for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The competitive spirit between them fueled Harrison’s ambitions: “Anything Ronda can do, I can do better.” This mindset helped drive her transition from judo to MMA, despite initial resistance from her judo coaches.

Current UFC Aspirations

Now signed with the UFC, Harrison believes she’s “exactly what the UFC needs right now,” citing her emotional, physical, and fight IQ maturity. Her competitive drive remains strong, evidenced by a playful bet with fellow Olympian Henry Cejudo – if she wins a UFC title, he’ll owe her 100 push-ups on demand.

“I want to fight them all, I want to solidify myself as the greatest,” Harrison declared, showing that her recent surgeries haven’t dampened her championship aspirations.

Personal Life and Dating Challenges

While managing her physical recovery, Harrison has also been navigating the complexities of personal life as a high-profile athlete. She’s established firm boundaries, including a “hard rule” against dating other fighters, and seeks a partner who can handle her success and independence.

“I’m not high maintenance, I make enough money,” she explained, describing her ideal match as someone “family oriented” and “chill.” Her perspective on relationships reflects her maturity: “I don’t need you but I want you.”

Looking to the Future

Despite the recent surgical procedures indicating her body’s wear and tear, Harrison maintains her focus on achieving greatness in the UFC. Her journey from judo prodigy to MMA star has been marked by both physical and personal challenges, but her determination remains unshaken.

The question now becomes how long Harrison can continue performing at the highest level while managing her body’s demands. With three surgeries in nine months serving as a stark reminder of the sport’s physical toll, Harrison faces the delicate balance of pursuing her championship dreams while preserving her long-term health.

For now, her message is clear: she’s not ready to step away from the sport she loves, even as her body sends warning signals. Harrison’s resilience in the face of these physical setbacks adds another chapter to her already impressive legacy in combat sports.
