The iconic reality competition series that made viewers squirm is making its return. Fox has released the first teaser for “Fear Factor: The Next Chapter,” confirming that ‘Jackass’ legend Johnny Knoxville will host the reimagined version of the show when it premieres in January 2026.
The announcement marks a new era for the franchise, which originally ran on NBC with Joe Rogan serving as host from 2001 to 2006, and again during a 2011-2012 revival. MTV also produced its own version from 2017 to 2018 with Ludacris as host.
According to the teaser and official descriptions, this isn’t simply a rerun of the original format. The reboot will feature a group of strangers living together in a remote location, where they’ll navigate not only the show’s signature extreme stunts and stomach-churning challenges but also a new element of social strategy. The season will culminate with one winner taking home a grand prize.
Producer Sharon Levy explained the decision to bring Knoxville on board, stating: “When you reimagine a series as legendary as ‘Fear Factor,’ you need a host who is the epitome of daring charisma and spectacle, and that’s Johnny Knoxville personified.”
“We’ll be pushing fear and social strategy to places that will redefine reality competition, which makes Johnny the perfect host for what will be a wild, unforgettable ride, and we’re beyond excited to see him unleash all the fear (and the fun) on our contestants and our viewers.”
The casting choice makes sense given Knoxville’s decades-long career performing death-defying stunts and putting his body on the line for entertainment. His experience with the ‘Jackass’ franchise has established him as someone who understands the psychology of pushing limits and the entertainment value of controlled chaos.
Earlier this year, when Fox first announced the reboot, network executives were coy about whether Rogan might return to host. During a press conference discussing Fox’s 2025-2026 schedule, Fox Entertainment president of entertainment Michael Thorn acknowledged Rogan’s connection to the property, calling him “major talent tied to the show,” but indicated the network was still in early planning stages at that time.
Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade emphasized that the “reinvention piece” was crucial to the network’s decision to revive the series. “It’s called ‘Fear Factor,’ and we’re going to take the brand name, but I think the producer has come up with a really interesting take on it, and it’s not going to feel like the show from 20 years ago,” Wade said.
The addition of social strategy elements suggests the new version will blend the extreme physical challenges the show is known for with the alliance-building and betrayal dynamics that have made shows like “Survivor” and “Big Brother” successful.
