Former super-middleweight boxing champion Savannah Marshall set to make MMA debut

Savannah Marshall is renowned as the women’s super middleweight boxing champion. She is poised to transition into the realm of mixed martial arts with her debut scheduled for June 8 at PFL Europe Newcastle in England. This announcement comes as a significant development in the combat sports world.

At 32 years old, hailing from England, Marshall solidified her dominance in boxing by clinching all four belts at 168 pounds through a majority-decision victory over Franchon Crews Dezurn in July. This triumph marked Marshall’s remarkable resurgence following her sole career defeat, a decision loss to Claressa Shields in October 2022.

With an impressive record of 13 wins, including 10 knockouts, against a single defeat, Marshall ranks as ESPN’s No. 7 pound-for-pound women’s boxer, underscoring her prowess and status within the sport.

PFL CEO Peter Murray expressed anticipation for Marshall’s MMA debut, highlighting the potential for a rematch between Marshall and Shields, following their highly publicized clash in women’s boxing history. The prospect of this rematch, this time in the MMA arena, adds further intrigue to Marshall’s venture into the PFL SmartCage.

Marshall is set to compete in the lightweight division within the PFL, marking a significant transition from her boxing career. Meanwhile, Shields, who boasts a record of 2 wins, 1 loss, and 1 finish in MMA, has already made her mark in the PFL, signaling a potential collision course between the two formidable athletes.
