Jeff Dye found himself in an awkward position recently when he became the replacement act for a Turning Point USA comedy event. He stepped in after Chris D’Elia’s involvement sparked significant online backlash and led to his removal from the lineup.
The irony wasn’t lost on observers. Dye had previously stated on his podcast that he was trying not to get “psy op-ed” by TPUSA. Yet by October 2026, he was officially booked to perform for the conservative student organization’s “America: Love it or Leave it Tour.”
Comedian Ron Funches captured the situation succinctly on social media: “Congrats to Jeff Dye for his new credit of ‘The guy Turning Point settled for when they couldn’t get people to be chill about Chris Delia.'”
The D’Elia situation unfolded messily and publicly. On an episode of his Congratulations podcast, D’Elia explained how a standard booking inquiry turned into a controversy. According to D’Elia, he received an offer through normal industry channels and agreed in general terms before finalizing details.
“I go, ‘Yeah, yeah, I love doing comedy. Let me put you in touch with my manager.’ I put them in touch with my manager. And then I was like, ‘What do they want me to do?’ And he said, ‘They want you to do 20 minutes of comedy. You can roast them, whatever.’ I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, maybe I’ll do that,'” D’Elia said.
The problems began once his name appeared online alongside other performers tied to the event. “It was a mixup that I was posted on this, okay? And when I tell you people were coming for my head. I mean they’re like… First of all, there was no ‘Hey what’s this all about?'” D’Elia said.
He attributed the situation to confusion in the booking process rather than any intentional commitment. “This was a simple mistake, dude. And it’s nobody’s fault except probably my managers, okay? So, well, you know what? I take responsibility, actually, because I should have just… I’m so aloof, dude.”
D’Elia dismissed accusations that accepting payment from a politically aligned organization reflected his personal beliefs. “I would do a show for Barack Obama. I would do a show for Hillary Clinton, JD Vance. I don’t care. Bags.”
He then pointed to what he saw as a double standard, referencing comedians who performed at the Riyadh Comedy Festival in Saudi Arabia. “Remember when I was making fun of all those comics that went to Saudi Arabia, by the way, where the [ ] happened to them? Nobody gives a [ ] about that. They still go to their shows.”
D’Elia clarified his target wasn’t all performers who worked that festival. “I’m not knocking all of the comics. I’m knocking the people who were the head of the Me Too movement and then went to Saudi Arabia and went to do those shows. Okay, y’all could go [expletive] yourself.”
His point was about inconsistent standards in public criticism, arguing that outrage appears selective depending on who accepts which bookings. D’Elia maintained he doesn’t align with any political faction and called himself unbothered by controversy over work he considers apolitical.
“I am absolutely way more free than I was,” he said, describing the entire episode as a “big mixup” rather than something more serious.
Meanwhile, TPUSA moved forward with the tour, and Dye filled the slot. The organization promoted his appearance on social media with a teaser: “Jeff Dye isn’t here to play nice! Join us on the America: Love it or Leave it Tour! You’ll want to be here for this one.”
Dye had previously spoken about the need to remain critical of political media and organizations such as TPUSA. Reflecting on his own views, he said:Â “Maybe you just kind of accidentally helped me kind of summarize some of this up. Is that I am working on me. I have said I am a flawed man. I have admitted it a million times, so I’m far from perfect.”
He then explained that his political commentary was also meant to apply to himself, adding:Â “When I go on these rants, I’m also preaching to myself guys, keep that in mind.”
Dye went on to specifically mention Turning Point USA and Fox News, saying:Â “I am trying my best to not be psy-oped by Turning Point USA or Fox News or any of them.”
