Demian Maia submits Alex Cowboy Oliveira in BJJ return

Demian Maia had been focussing on his UFC career for the last 15 years. Following the end of his contract with the UFC, 44 year old ADCC winner returned to jiu jitsu competition thanks to a Brazilian promotion BJJ Stars.

Maia faced another MMA veteran on his return – Alex Cowboy Oliveira. Oliveira received the news that the UFC was releasing him 3 weeks ago following a loss to kevin Holland at UFC 272. Oliveira was initially doing well however Holland reversed his fortune and ended up finishing Oliveira.

Oliveira (22-12-1, 1 NC) had been with the UFC since 2015. He didn’t waste any time and quickly agreed to a match with Demian Maia. Maia is considered one of the best grapplers in MMA but some would say he needs a refresher in the modern bjj meta before he faces someone with a straight grappling background.

Maia’s match with Oliveira was rather interesting and culminated when Maia latched onto his favorite submission – the triangle. Oliveira was quickly forced to tap.
