Boxer Devin Haney wants revenge for Ryan Garcia disrespecting Muslim faith “behind scenes”

Boxing phenomenon Ryan Garcia seems to have crossed a line he can’t come back from with his trash talk aimed at rival Devin Haney.

In a recent interview with The MMA Hour, Haney revealed that Garcia made highly offensive comments about Haney’s Muslim faith that were indirectly relayed to him. And now Haney is determined to make Garcia pay dearly for his intolerant words.

Haney stated: “Its personal because, you know, Ryan said some things that like just rubbed me the wrong way that it’s like no coming back from it. Like you know, like most fighters, we after, you know, a hug and it’s like, ‘all right, you know, good fight. I didn’t mean what I said.’ Now he said some stuff about my religion that are like, he cannot come back from. He knows what he said.”

Haney fumed, referring to disparaging remarks by Garcia that a source disclosed to Haney. He stated: “He knows what he said. He knows who he said it to. He didn’t say it to me, he said to somebody and it got back to me. ”

While Haney declined to repeat Garcia’s specific comments, he made clear they were completely out of bounds and personal. Haney said: “This is for all the Muslims around the world. You spoke about my religion, you spoke down on my religion. So now I’ll make an example out of you.”

In Haney’s view, Garcia’s religiously bigoted remarks have made their rivalry far more than just a boxing grudge match. For Haney, it’s now his solemn duty to punish Garcia in the name of his faith.

But it seems like Haney misunderstood that Garcia made fun of his religion. In an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Garcia said that he wished Haney a “Merry Christmas.” It seems like Haney took issue with it.

Garcia said: “[Devin Haney] is a dumb a**. I never disrespected his religion. I want that to be clear right now. First of all, I would never do that. Second of all, I could show you the DMs, I said: ‘Merry Christmas.’ He took that as disrespect. Did I know that Muslims don’t celebrate Christmas? No!”

It remains to be seen if and when Haney will get the chance to exact vengeance on Garcia in the ring. But Haney is clearly taking Garcia’s insults to heart in a deeply personal way.
