Boxer Collapses In Between Rounds, Medical Team Rushes Him Out Of The Arena

A boxing match in Detroit ended suddenly when Joseph George collapsed between rounds during his bout against Atif Oberlton, forcing medical personnel to rush into the ring and assist the athlete.

According to sources, the incident took place during the co-main event of an evening headlined by Claressa Shields’ rematch against Franchon Crews-Dezurn. After the first round was over, George returned to his corner as the opening round concluded. His trainer provided him with water as he settled onto his stool, but moments later, George went down while still seated.

Broadcast cameras quickly cut away from the scene as George remained on the canvas. When replays aired, they broadcast showed a possible accidental clash of heads that had occurred earlier in the round, potentially contributing to what followed.

Medical staff immediately entered the ring to attend to George. The gravity of the situation became apparent to Oberlton, who crossed the ring to check on his opponent’s condition. After several tense moments, George managed to get back on his feet, though he appeared visibly disoriented as he was helped out of the arena.

Officials declared Oberlton the winner by technical knockout, improving his professional record to 15-0. Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding his victory, the undefeated boxer’s primary concern was his opponent’s wellbeing.

“I’m so glad that he got up on his feet and that he’s OK,” Oberlton said. “I’m a true champion, true warrior. We can do whatever you want to do it, but I’m just happy that he’s OK.”

Following the stoppage, the two competitors shared a moment together, embracing and exchanging words. Oberlton later revealed that George still seemed affected by whatever had transpired in the ring.

“I just wanted to make sure he was safe. At the end of the day, we’re warriors, but we want to leave here the same way we come out,” Oberlton explained. “He was like a bit confused and stuff like that so I can’t really tell.”
