Bodybuilding legend Dorian Yates on the current generation: They’re weak and soft and they need to get stronger

Six-time Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates has never been one to sugarcoat reality. He recently shared a message on social media that reveals his concerns about modern society.

In a video posted to Instagram, the bodybuilding legend talked about the state of today’s youth. Yates questioned whether comfort and convenience have come at a cost. “What do I think about the current generation? Well I think they’re weak and they’re soft and maybe it’s not their fault because it’s the environment.”

He went on to explain that this softness isn’t unique to one generation, suggesting that each era becomes progressively more comfortable than the last. “Maybe I’m softer than the generation before me because things are too comfortable now. You got it too comfortable, get too much technology and a man needs challenges. You need challenges, you need to overcome challenges and to get stronger,” Yates said.

For Yates, the solution lies in embracing physical hardship, particularly through training. He emphasized the gym as a proving ground for building resilience and responsibility.

He said, “The challenge is in the gym guys, we need to get stronger. Because we need strong men in the future, society needs strong men and you’re the new generation. You got to get strong for the future, for yourselves and for your families.”

Yates also tied physical strength directly to mental toughness, arguing that stress and struggle are essential for personal growth. “So you need to have some stress in your life, challenge yourself, go to the gym, push yourself and you will feel so much better. When you get stronger, you’re going to get stronger.”

He elaborated on how repeatedly overcoming physical challenges builds habits that translate into real-world resilience. “A challenge and you overcome this, this becomes a habit, right? Because life is going to throw things at you and you’re not going to be ready unless you get stronger mentally and physically. It’s all attached, it’s the same thing.”

Yates closed the message in a blunt manner, reminding viewers that self-reliance is non-negotiable. “So challenge yourself guys, let’s get stronger for the future because I’m not going to be here to hold your hand.”
