AI Boxing match between Buster Douglas and Michael Spinks side eyed by combat sports fans

In an unconventional event, former heavyweight boxing champions Buster Douglas and Michael Spinks are set to face off in the ring once again – but this time with a twist. Billed as the “first ever AI celebrity boxing match”, the bout is being organized by a company called Celebrity Boxing.

The matchup is a rematch of their 1990 event where the underdog Douglas scored a massive upset, knocking out the previously undefeated Spinks to claim the undisputed heavyweight title. Now over 30 years later, the two ring legends will be brought together by artificial intelligence technology for an exhibition match unlike any other.

Details are still scarce on exactly how AI will be integrated, but Celebrity Boxing claims it will be the first boxing event of its kind to feature AI enhancements or components. Potential applications could include using AI to analyze past clashes and predict strategy, incorporating AI graphics or commentary, or even exploring human-AI hybrid training techniques.

Regardless of the specific AI implementation, the nostalgia and novelty factors seem primed to attract significant attention. Tho there is skepticism if this can translate into viewership. Douglas vs Spinks was one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, and seeing the two foes reprise their clash is an interesting idea on paper.

The AI boxing extravaganza is currently scheduled to take place this summer, though an exact date and venue have not been announced.

Both Spinks and Douglas are now in their 60s.
