A documentary on Fedor Emelianenko’s brother is sitting in purgatory after the Russian government refused to let it be released

A thought-provoking documentary about Alexander Emelianenko, the younger brother of legendary mixed martial arts icon Fedor Emelianenko, remains unreleased after Russian authorities denied it a distribution certificate, deeming the content “too shocking” for public viewing.

The film, created by award-winning Russian filmmaker Valeria Gai Germanica, offers an intimate look into the complex life of the younger Emelianenko brother, whose career has been marked by controversy and personal struggles. In one particularly striking scene from the trailer, security camera footage shows an encounter between Emelianenko and armed police, where he makes provocative statements while unclothed.

Alexander initially gained recognition during the PRIDE era but never quite emerged from his brother’s formidable shadow. His early career showed promise, with his only defeats coming against notable opponents like Mirko Crocop, Josh Barnett, and Fabricio Werdum in his first seven years of competition. However, reports of health issues led to his relegation to smaller promotions in the Caucasus region.

In 2014, his life took a darker turn when he was imprisoned for a serious offense involving his housekeeper. Following his release in 2017, he returned to combat sports, accumulating a 6-2-1 record in MMA and 3-2 in boxing competitions.

The relationship between the brothers has been notably strained. In 2017, Alexander claimed that Fedor hadn’t spoken to him in ten years, blaming “sycophants” around his brother. Fedor responded with a stern open letter, stating, “Sycophant? That’s you, Judas. I feel sorry that people who were close to you and supported you in hard moments are now suffering. I personally have apologized for you to dozens of people.”

Germanica has announced plans to release the documentary for free if the trailer reaches one million views, hoping to finally bring this controversial project to light after years of financial uncertainty.
