In a funny appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu standout Garry Tonon revealed his coach John Danaher’s unconventional perspective on marriage, which has become something of a legend in the grappling community.
Danaher, known for his analytical approach to both martial arts and life, has reportedly outlined five specific circumstances under which marriage might be considered a rational decision.
According to Tonon, Danaher’s first criterion is that the prospective bride must be between 18 and 25 years old. The second requirement stipulates that the man must be over 55 years of age. The third and fourth conditions form an interesting economic dynamic: the man should have no money, while the woman must be wealthy.
The fifth and final criterion, which Tonon mentions as a recent addition to Danaher’s theory, suggests that the woman should be particularly enthusiastic about intimate relations.
“Otherwise, it’s just not even a question,” Tonon quoted his mentor as saying, indicating that outside these specific parameters, Danaher advises against marriage entirely.
This philosophical approach to matrimony has sparked considerable discussion within the martial arts community, with Tonon noting that he would be particularly interested in seeing Danaher debate these points with someone who disagrees with his perspective.
While some might find these views controversial, they align with Danaher’s reputation for approaching all aspects of life with the same systematic precision he applies to his renowned coaching methodology.
