MMA legend Bas Rutten recently revealed his groundbreaking work on the popular video game Grand Theft Auto 4, and how he helped revolutionize motion capture for fighting games.
Speaking on Mike Perry’s podcast, Rutten described his experience doing motion capture for GTA 4’s combat sequences. “Every robbery, every punch, every kick – all the stuff you see, that’s me,” Rutten said.
But Rutten didn’t just go through the standard motions. He suggested a key change that would make the fighting more realistic. “Normally when you do motion capture, you do it in the air,” Rutten explained. “I told them, ‘I think it’s way better if I hit something.'”
By actually striking focus mitts and pads during the motion capture process, Rutten was able to show the impact and power of each strike. “You see literally the power coming back because you’re connecting,” he said.
This innovative approach impressed the developers. “They were cheering when they suddenly saw me hitting things,” Rutten recalled. “Now everybody started doing it of course, because at the beginning it was just hitting the air.”
Rutten’s contributions extended beyond just the fighting mechanics. He also voiced an in-game TV show called “In the Man Room with Bas and Jeremy,” which he described as “freaking hilarious” with him playing a “complete psychopath.”
The Dutch martial arts icon takes pride in how his work changed the video game industry’s approach to combat sequences. “We changed the whole industry there,” Rutten said.
For gamers who enjoyed brawling their way through GTA 4’s gritty roads, they have Bas Rutten to thank for making those virtual fistfights feel more visceral and impactful than ever before.
