Dustin Poirier Lifted Male Friend By The Buns To ‘Help Him Make Weight’

Making weight in MMA is serious business. Athletes will go to extraordinary lengths to hit their required number on the scale, from dehydration to last-minute sauna sessions. But UFC star Dustin Poirier recently revealed that he once took matters into his own hands in the most literal way possible.

During a conversation, Poirier shared a memorable story from a weigh-in in Mississippi where a friend of his was competing. The situation was tense as his buddy stepped on the scale and came in over the limit, a nightmare scenario that can derail an entire bout.

“One time, one of my buddies was competing in Mississippi, and they had the towel out. He was over. I was behind the towel with him. Everybody was in front,” Poirier recounted.

The towel trick is a common sight at weigh-ins, where athletes strip down completely behind a privacy screen in a final desperate attempt to shed those last fractions of weight.

With everyone focused on the scale from the front and the towel providing cover, Poirier saw an opportunity.

“I grabbed a handful of hairy man [ ]cheek, and I lifted him up a little bit, got him on weight,” he explained with characteristic honesty.

When asked for clarification about the technique, Poirier confirmed there was no inappropriate contact involved. “No finger, but… Yeah, just a little cup. Got him on weight.”

The panel’s justification for the unorthodox assist was simple and spoke to the brotherhood found in combat sports: “Hey, whatever you got to do for your boys.”
