Newly signed UFC welterweight Ronald Humphrey is generating buzz online, not for what he does inside the octagon, but for comments he made about what goes through his mind at the grocery store. In an interview, the rising 170-lb (77 kg) talent opened up about the mindset that’s carried him through his early UFC outings, and it’s turned into one of the more talked-about soundbites of the week.
The conversation started with praise. The interviewer pointed to the fallout from a recent welterweight title bout, where Ian Machado Garry drew criticism for appearing hesitant and failing to press his advantage when opportunities presented themselves.
By contrast, the newcomer had been praised for showing exactly the kind of intensity Garry was accused of lacking, an aggressive, all-in approach that had fans and analysts buzzing after his most recent octagon appearance.
The interviewer asked whether that edge was something innate, a natural swagger that shows up the moment the cage door closes.
His answer went further than anyone expected.
“Yeah, I embody vi0lence, I love it,” he said. “I think about it constantly, my coaches make fun of me for it sometimes. I walk into a Whole Foods sometimes, and I just see all the people that can’t fig ht. I’m like, man, I could really f**k all y’all up, and there’s nothing y’all could do about it, and I could take this store over.”
He continued, “And maybe I’d have a couple of minutes before the police get there, but even then, you’re done, you’re cooked. What are you gonna do to me? So yeah, I definitely embody vi0lence a lot, in a healthy way.”
