Ahead of his IBF heavyweight title fight against Filip Hrgovic on August 29, Moses Itaumah sat down with Piers Morgan for an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored. Amid discussion of his unbeaten record and comparisons to Mike Tyson, Piers Morgan asked the 21-year-old directly about his faith, and Itaumah offered a candid, still-evolving answer.
Asked how important religion is to him, Itaumah didn’t give a simple response.
“I think that’s only be able to find out with time,” he said. He then explained the background he comes from: “As of right now, I was raised a Christian, I go to church, read the Bible, and so on, but there’s something that you do because you’ve been doing it since you were a kid, and then there’s something that you choose to do.”
He summed up his current position with honesty: “I’m lost and I’m still trying to find my way.”
Despite that uncertainty, Itaumah confirmed prayer remains a regular part of his life. When Morgan asked whether he actively prays, and specifically whether he would say a prayer before his match, Itaumah answered without hesitation.
He said, “Yeah, of course. I pray with my family, I pray when I go to bed, and so on.” He did note that his circle isn’t uniformly Christian, which can complicate pre-bout rituals. “The group of people I hang around with are all different religions, so it does get a bit sticky when we make a prayer before a fig ht, because everybody’s different religions. But I think everybody’s got enough respect to join in.”
Faith also came up in relation to Tyson Fury, who has become something of a mentor figure to Itaumah after they spent weeks training together in Malta, Saudi Arabia and Morecambe. Morgan noted that Fury had spoken to Itaumah about “life, about religion, about money,” and asked what advice Fury had given him on the subject.
Itaumah laughed off giving specifics, joking, “Not everything’s for the camera, Piers,” but confirmed the topic had genuinely come up between them, saying they’d “had some interesting conversations” covering relationships and religion alongside boxing.
