Chuck Norris Once Explained Why Only “Wannabes” Intimidate Others for No Reason

In an old conversation captured on video, Chuck Norris once offered valuable insight into what separates genuine martial artists from pretenders

During an interview, Norris was asked about various martial artists and actors in the industry, including Steven Seagal. When the interviewer recounted an intimidating encounter with an unnamed martial artist who claimed to be a world champion and threatened to harm him in a bookstore, Norris’s response was illuminating.

“Are you sure he’s a world champion?” Norris asked skeptically. “I don’t think he is. Because I know all the world champions. I know every one of them and I don’t know one that would have that attitude.”

The action star went on to make an observation about the type of person who relies on intimidation tactics. “He may be a wannabe,” Norris suggested. “The wannabes are the ones with the attitude.”

He continued, delivering what would become the core of his philosophy on true martial arts: “He’s a wannabe that will never be. See, because guys with that attitude just don’t make it.”

This perspective from Norris carries particular weight, given his own experiences with humility in martial arts. According to actor and martial artist Richard Norton, who witnessed the event, Norris once had an encounter with the legendary Gracie family in Brazil.

The session began with Rickson Gracie, who Norton said “absolutely smashed” Norris and “handled him like it was nothing.” But the most memorable moment came when Helio Gracie, then in his 70s, invited Norris to train with him.

During their session, Helio ended up on his back with Norris in the mount position. The elderly master then requested something unexpected, he asked Norris to throw a punch at him.

“Chuck said he’s like ‘Oh Mr. Gracie, I don’t want to do that,'” Norton recounted. When Norris finally threw a hesitant punch, Helio swiftly caught him in a cross-collar choke that was so effective, Norris blacked out. Norris reportedly couldn’t eat for two days following the encounter.

Helio later apologized, saying, “Oh, sorry for being a little bit hard.”
