Trans-woman wins all-female Fortnite Championship at TwitchCon

A tournament designed to create opportunities for women in competitive gaming has sparked fierce debate after a trans-identifying male competitor claimed the top prize at TwitchCon San Diego this past weekend.

The Milk Cup 2025 LAN Championship, which bills itself as providing “a platform for women on a journey toward professional esports,” saw streamer “Vader” and partner Nina ‘ilyynina’ Fernandez secure victory in what’s described as Fortnite’s largest women-only tournament. The win came with a substantial $78,000 prize.

The host posted about the win on their social media platform.

According to its mission statement, the Milk Cup was established specifically “to provide women with more opportunities to succeed in esports.” The tournament emerged from a stark reality in competitive gaming: while women represent nearly half of all players, they comprise only a tiny fraction of the professional talent pool.

The event was designed to address this imbalance by offering female gamers elite broadcast quality, significant prize money, and an environment shielded from the online harassment that frequently plagues women in gaming spaces.

Following the victory, Vader told Esports Insider, “It felt crazy to lift that trophy… to prove people wrong in a sense, and really show that anybody can participate in esports. Don’t let people stop you. Don’t let comments get to your head. Believe in yourself.”

Critics argue that while esports may indeed be open to everyone, Vader’s decision to compete in a tournament explicitly created for women undermines its fundamental purpose. The controversy extends beyond questions of potential biological advantages—such as research suggesting men typically demonstrate faster reaction times than women by approximately 34 milliseconds on average.

The core issue, opponents contend, centers on the displacement of opportunities intended for female competitors. In an industry where women already struggle to secure visibility, sponsorships, and professional advancement, dedicated spaces like the Milk Cup were meant to level an uneven playing field.

Following the championship, Vader celebrated the win on social media, highlighting the prize money. The streamer’s social media feed features numerous similar posts showcasing earnings from previous tournaments.
