Boxer fined £10,000 for clip of him using a sauna to help cut weight

Chris Eubank Jr. has been hit with a £10,000 (approximately $12,700) fine by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) for “misuse of social media.” This happened after he posted footage suggesting he used a sauna to help cut weight before his scheduled bout with Conor Benn.

The controversial post, which detailed Eubank’s weight-cutting techniques, caught the attention of boxing authorities who took formal action following a hearing by the Board’s Southern Area Council last week.

According to sources, BBBofC gave an official statement: “Mr. Eubank Jnr. was found to be in breach of Regulation 25 for misuse of social media. The Southern Area Council fined Mr. Eubank Jnr. the sum of £10,000.”

The incident occurred during preparations for Eubank’s April contest against Benn at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The 35-year-old boxer arrived late to the official weigh-in ceremony and narrowly missed the 160-pound weight limit by half an ounce. Following this, Eubank shared clips on his social media accounts revealing his weight-cutting methods, which ultimately led to the disciplinary action.

The BBBofC statement continued: “Mr. Eubank Jnr. was confirmed as arriving late for the official weigh-in ceremony for the contest in question and received a severe reprimand placed on his file from the Southern Area Council.”

Despite the weight controversy, the April bout between Eubank and Benn proceeded. Eubank emerged victorious by unanimous decision after 12 gruelling rounds.

This contest was particularly notable as it continued the legendary rivalry between the Eubank and Benn families that has spanned over three decades.

The Board has stipulated that Eubank must pay the fine before they will license him for his scheduled rematch with Benn, which is set to take place on September 20 in London. This upcoming contest will be the second chapter in their personal rivalry, following their initial meeting earlier this year.

This isn’t the first financial penalty Eubank has faced recently. Earlier this year, he reportedly paid £100,000 (approximately $127,000) to the BBBofC following an incident where he slapped Benn with an egg.

Boxing fans now await the September rematch, which will only proceed if Eubank complies with the Board’s financial requirements and obtains the necessary license to compete.
