Wisconsin Rep. faces backlash after suggesting women ‘work harder’ if they’re being beaten in sports

In the ongoing discourse surrounding transgender athletes in sports, Wisconsin Rep. Dave Considine’s recent comment has sparked outrage online.

This comment came as a response to concerns from women who feel they are at a disadvantage when competing against transgender athletes in sports.

The debate over gender and sports has generated strong opinions on both sides, and it recently manifested in legislative action in the Wisconsin State Assembly.

The Republicans in the assembly passed a controversial bill aimed at excluding transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports. This move was accompanied by another bill that prohibits sterilization, castration, and irreversible hormonal treatments for young transgender individuals.

Considine’s remark revolves around the concern that some parents have about their daughters potentially missing out on scholarships and opportunities to play for specific teams due to the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports.

He commented, “The best we got was, well, some parents are concerned that their daughter might miss out on a scholarship. They might miss out on playing for this team or that team. Boy, that…sounds like selfishness. I’m sorry to label it that way, but that sounds like what it is to me.”

“And my granddaughter who is playing college sports, I asked her about this when we had this two years ago,” he said.

“And she said ‘you know what, if a trans woman was competing against me in the sport then that just means if that person is better than me, I need to work harder.'”

The debate about transgender athletes competing in women’s sports is not limited to Wisconsin alone. Prominent figures, such as Lance Armstrong, have also expressed doubts about the fairness of transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.

Armstrong posted a video on Twitter, raising important questions about the topic and the nature of contemporary discussions. He noted a growing fear of engaging in spirited debate, with people more concerned about potential consequences like job loss or public shaming.

However, Armstrong’s comments faced significant backlash from his audience. Some pointed out his own history of cheating and attempting to undermine those who exposed his actions, making him an unsuitable advocate for a fair sports debate.

Others emphasized that Armstrong, known as one of the most infamous professional sports cheats in history, should refrain from participating in discussions about fairness in women’s sports.

Notably, Armstrong’s own fall from grace in 2012, when he was stripped of his titles and banned from professional competition due to PED use, underscores his unique perspective on the impact of PEDs and hormones in competitive sports.
