Popular podcaster and UFC commentator Joe Rogan has never shied away from discussing personal health choices. During a conversation on his show, Rogan openly shared his experience with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), which he began at age 40.
“I did all that when I was 40,” Rogan explained while discussing hormone replacement therapy with guests. Now 51, Rogan emphasized the benefits he’s experienced, stating it “100% helps” and “makes a big difference.”
Rogan addressed the stigma often attached to hormone therapy, advocating for its proper medical use. “There’s a stigma attached to that in a lot of people,” he noted. “All that matters is that you have it in your system. If you don’t have it in your system, you’re not going to feel as good.”
The podcaster detailed his methodical approach to beginning treatment, emphasizing the importance of medical supervision. “The key to doing it is to do it correctly. You’re supposed to go to a doctor that’s going to test your blood levels, test your nutrient levels, and adjust your diet first,” he explained.
According to Rogan, his process began with lifestyle modifications before any hormone supplementation. His doctors first evaluated his sleep, stress levels, diet, and water intake, followed by dietary adjustments. “This is a many, many month process that I went through,” he shared.
Only after these lifestyle changes did his treatment progress to hormone therapy. “Then they start adding a little stuff, add a little bit of growth hormone, add a little bit of testosterone. First it was cream and then it became injections,” Rogan said.
Rogan emphasized that the goal isn’t superhuman hormone levels but rather achieving “the hormone levels of a healthy young man.”
While acknowledging the advantages of TRT, Rogan also noted there are natural ways to boost testosterone, including resistance training. “There’s ways of elevating your testosterone naturally,” he said, mentioning exercises like deadlifts, sprints, and squats, though he admitted these methods “don’t work as well” as medical treatment.
For men considering their options, Rogan’s message was straightforward: “If you’re fine with not feeling as good, you’re not going to feel as good. But if you’re not fine with it, this is 2018. Hormone replacement therapy exists for a reason. And that reason is it makes you feel way better.”
