When Dr. Mike Israetel Claimed He Had Elite Genetics

Dr. Mike Israetel recently opened up about his genetic potential and training philosophy, drawing comparisons to legendary bodybuilders like Dorian Yates and Mike Mentzer.

During a conversation with Peter Attia, Israetel revealed insights about his own physique development and the limitations he faced compared to elite competitors.

When discussing training volume and intensity, Israetel acknowledged that while Dorian Yates built a remarkable physique training approximately 14 sets per muscle group per week. This approach represented only “70 or 85% of what all of those muscles could eventually have hypertrophied.”

He noted that “Dorian was insanely jacked, but he was jacked all over and probably could have in retrospect benefited from more specialization phases on various weak points that he had.”

Israetel candidly assessed his own genetic limitations, stating, “by mortal standards, they were the biggest arms you’ve ever seen in your life. By competitive bodybuilders of his era standards relative to the rest of his physique, he could have had bigger arms, could have bigger shoulders.”

He then made a revealing comparison to himself: “Dorian seemed to have an kind of all-around approach, which up until about a year ago, so did I. And so I had never looked very aesthetic, but boy were my legs super big because they could just eat up the growth all the time.”

Regarding Mike Mentzer’s even more minimal training approach, Israetel noted that “plenty of people thought that’s how it works. Mike Mentzer did that only in a more extreme version than even Dorian did.” However, he emphasized that while this method works, “it’s not the most efficient or the most effective way to train.”

During the conversation on the podcast, he also stated: “I have very elite genetics, not swagger. It’s just stating a fact. You know, like anyone who sees this on video will notice that my head is curiously shaped like… my mastication muscles are absurd. I looked like this before I ever took any st**oids. And so, yeah, I was kind of built for this.”

However, Israetel’s claims are quite ironic as he openly admitted to running what he himself described as an “absurd” amount of PED.

Israetel revealed that at his peak, his total androgen load reached the equivalent of 2500 mg of testosterone per week, a level that surprised even seasoned bodybuilding fans.

Despite what many would assume should guarantee elite aesthetics, Israetel was widely criticized online for photos that failed to match the PED intensity behind them.

Reflecting on his previous protocols, he admitted that during his best-conditioned phase in 2024, “my total androgen load was about 2500 milligrams of testosterone equivalent per week,” a level he now views as excessive.

Ironically, Israetel also said, “Taking a ton of gear is overrated. You can get almost the same results taking way less gear and save your health and save your sanity.”

Israetel recently claimed that he dropped from approximately 235.8 lbs (106.9 kg) at 15.6% body fat to 222 lbs at 6% body fat over 15 weeks while gaining lean mass.
