Popular podcast host and UFC commentator Joe Rogan finds himself once again pushing back against political labels, this time rejecting characterizations of his comedy scene as “anti-woke.” The latest clarification comes just weeks after the UFC commentator declared his independence from both left and right political camps.
In a recent episode, Rogan expressed visible frustration with media coverage describing his Austin-based comedy venue The Mothership as an “anti-woke comedy scene.” His response was: “We’re not anti woke. There’s there’s like a ton of left-wing comics at the mothership.”
The denial shows Rogan’s philosophical stance against tribal thinking that he outlined in his previous political commentary. During an earlier discussion with guests Matt Serra and Din Thomas, he argued that Americans have become “so tribalized” and criticized how people feel compelled to “justify everything your team believes in, including s**t that doesn’t make any sense.”
This latest pushback against the anti-woke label appears consistent with Rogan’s stated preference for nuanced positions over rigid ideological alignment. Rather than embracing any particular comedic or political movement, he emphasized that his venue simply focuses on quality entertainment.
“Why not just do great stuff, go do great stuff,” he said, dismissing the need for political categorization entirely.
Rogan also previously made comments about refusing to be “boxed into either major political camp.” He expressed annoyance with being able to immediately identify a director’s political leanings while watching films, preferring entertainment without overt messaging.
Comedy icons like Marc Maron have been critical of Joe Rogan and his comedy scene. They claim that Rogan and his circle have shifted from being edgy contrarians to serving as political mouthpieces. Maron specifically criticized their public support for President Donald Trump.
