Brazilian mixed martial arts icon Wanderlei Silva is moving forward with legal action against Rafael Freitas following a chaotic post-bout incident that left the former UFC champion with severe facial injuries.
The 49-year-old Silva suffered what he describes as a criminal assault during a mass brawl that erupted after his boxing exhibition against former world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas at Spaten Fight Night 2 in São Paulo. The incident has since gone viral across social media platforms, showing Silva being knocked unconscious during the melee.
Silva revealed the extent of his injuries in a social media statement earlier this week, detailing the significant damage inflicted during the confrontation. “I broke my two orbital [bones], I have my nose broken in four places,” Silva explained, painting a picture of the serious medical consequences he now faces.
The former PRIDE Fighting Championships middleweight champion described how the assault unfolded, identifying Rafael Freitas – the son of his boxing opponent – as his attacker.
“I was assaulted in criminal fashion by ‘Popo’s’ son, who invaded the ring. He invaded the ring hitting me with two punches to the back of the head. Then, he landed the punch that opened a seven-stitch cut around my eye.”
The aftermath has taken both a physical and emotional toll on Silva, who expressed his determination to pursue justice through the courts. “I had several work to do but I can’t because of my face,” Silva said. “I can’t sleep, I’m in a lot of pain, in such discomfort. That can’t stay like that. That was undoubtedly a criminal act, and every criminal act has to be judged by the justice. And I’m going after justice.”
The veteran competitor, who was making his first appearance in any combat sport since 2018, was repeatedly warned for fouls during the bout, including illegal headbutts. He was ultimately disqualified when officials determined his infractions had crossed the line from accidental to intentional.
What should have been a simple end to an exhibition match quickly devolved into chaos as members from both camps stormed the ring. Video footage shows the confusion and violence that followed, with Silva eventually being knocked unconscious and lying motionless on the canvas while the brawl continued around him.
Silva reflected on the disturbing scene with visible emotion. “I’m very upset, I’m really hurt. Hurt in the inside, hurt in the outside. Watching that scene, me laying on the ground and people — who weren’t even security because the event had no security — dragging me, right? What a horrible scene, you know?”
Rafael Freitas has since defended his actions, claiming he was protecting his family during the altercation. Speaking to Globo, he characterized his involvement as justified self-defense. “When I realized a brawl had started, initiated by Wanderlei’s team, his son, his coach Andre Dida and Werdum,” Rafael Freitas said. “When I saw all of them assaulting my father and my brothers, I got in legitimate defense. In the heat of the moment, I only thought about defending my family.”
The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a comeback opportunity for Silva, who holds multiple records with PRIDE Fighting Championships, including the most wins, knockouts, and title defenses. He reigned as middleweight champion for six years and maintained an impressive winning streak spanning five years and 18 contests.
