In recent mixed martial arts history, there has been one of the worst stoppages that occurred during Fury FC 76 in San Antonio, Texas on March 24, 2023.
The main event featured former Dana White Contender Series (DWCS) veteran Edgar Chairez against Gianni Vazquez. The match was very competitive up to the fourth round where Chairez locked up a tight triangle, and what followed was very worrisome.
Vazquez went out while locked in the triangle, but unfortunately, Texas referee Frank Collazo missed it. While still out of it, Chairez transitioned to an armbar and held it for 20 seconds until Vazquez woke up and tapped.
The victory was massive for Chairez, but it was overshadowed by the evident incompetency of Collazo, which could have had grave consequences for Vazquez.
The incident has since gone viral, and Twitter users have expressed their concern over the situation. Many have called for Collazo to never referee another MMA bout again, and some have even questioned the qualifications of MMA referees in general.
Vazquez, thankfully, appeared to be alright when he woke up and stood during the decision. However, the incident should serve as a reminder of the importance of qualified referees in MMA events.
