Popular YouTube streamer IShowSpeed’s visit to New Zealand’s City Kickboxing gym took an unexpected turn during a training session with UFC veteran Dan Hooker.
The social media personality, known for his globe-trotting adventures in 2024, found himself facing off against one of the most accomplished athletes from the renowned training facility that has produced stars like former UFC champion Israel Adesanya and interim title challenger Kai Kara-France.
Upon arriving at the facility on November 25, Speed confidently proclaimed, “Nobody in here can beat me at boxing.” However, his bravado quickly diminished after encountering the gym’s talent.
When faced with Hooker, a seasoned professional with 24 wins to his name, Speed immediately set ground rules: “No kicking,” he stressed. “I know how this sport goes. I don’t want nothing broken. Let’s do boxing.”
The ensuing exchange saw Speed cautiously moving around the octagon’s perimeter, attempting to maintain distance. Despite his efforts, Hooker’s superior skill set proved overwhelming, resulting in multiple knockdowns.
“Welcome to my world, brother,” Hooker remarked with a laugh. When Speed mentioned a weight disparity, Hooker quickly pointed out, “I’m lighter than you,” referencing the streamer’s earlier weigh-in at the gym.
Following the session, Speed acknowledged Hooker’s expertise: “He got me good,” he said, holding his ribs. “You a good a** fighter, I could tell you were going easy on me.”
Hooker later shared his respect for the YouTuber on Instagram, stating, “Balls of steel, this man.”
While Speed has previously showcased his boxing abilities on camera, this experience at one of Oceania’s premier MMA facilities demonstrated the vast difference between social media personalities and professional athletes. However, his willingness to step into the cage with elite competitors suggests potential opportunities in the influencer boxing scene.
