In an extraordinary moment, a giraffe showcased its dominance with a judo-like neck throw, toppling its rival with a powerful lift of its leg.
Wayne Howarth is a seasoned guide who witnessed a remarkable event while leading a tour through South Africa’s Kariega Game Reserve.
During the tour, Howarth and his group stumbled upon two male giraffes engaged in a fierce battle for the attention of a nearby female. The confrontation began typically, with the giants swinging their massive necks at each other in an attempt to land a decisive blow. However, the dynamic changed dramatically when the younger giraffe executed a surprising maneuver.
Footage of the encounter reveals the younger giraffe placing its head beneath the older rival’s back left calf, lifting it into the air. This move caused the older giraffe to lose balance and crash to the ground. The victorious giraffe didn’t stop there. It further asserted its dominance by swinging its head at the fallen opponent and placing a triumphant hoof on its body.
Wayne Howarth expressed his astonishment at the raw power displayed by the animals.
He stated: “I was amazed at the power of the two animals. It really got my adrenaline going being so near to them on foot. I’ve been a guide in Kariega for 11 years and I have never had such a sighting like this. I have seen giraffes fighting but never seen a knock down.”
Howarth and his group observed the fight from a safe distance before moving closer. The guests were left in awe, witnessing such an unfiltered display of nature.
He continued: “We were on a guided walk and saw them from a distance so we made an approach. The fight went on for roughly 15 minutes, it was over a female who was coming into oestrus. The guests were shocked to witness such an encounter. It really was nature in its true raw form.”
“Neither of the giraffes suffered any injuries. The two bulls ended the fight, the bigger and older bull who was knocked over eventually got back up.”
Although the video was captured in 2018, it only recently surfaced on social media. The video quickly amassed over 3.9 million views.
Social media users were surprised by the giraffe’s unexpected brutality. Many humorously speculated about the younger giraffe’s training, with comments suggesting it had taken judo classes or watched too many UFC matches.
One user joked, “The giraffe is trained by Khabib Nurmagomedov.”
