(Video) Overweight UFC debutant had cornerman spit spray water on him prior to submission loss

In an unusual scene at UFC Vegas 104, newcomer Diyar Nurgozhay’s challenging debut was punctuated by an unconventional moment when his cornerman was seen spitting spray water on him before his eventual submission loss to Brendson Ribeiro.

Nurgozhay, who had already drawn attention by missing weight by 4.5 pounds for the scheduled light heavyweight bout, forcing it to proceed at a 210.5-pound catchweight, faced additional scrutiny when cameras caught the peculiar pre-fight ritual.

The unusual preparation did little to help Nurgozhay’s performance, as Ribeiro dominated the contest from the opening bell. The Brazilian demonstrated superior technique, landing a powerful outside leg kick early and effectively countering Nurgozhay’s telegraphed attacks.

Despite Nurgozhay’s reliance on feints, he struggled to mount any meaningful offense. His slow hands and predictable striking made him an easy target for Ribeiro, who showcased remarkable composure throughout the encounter. A precise straight right following a jab sent Nurgozhay to the canvas, though Ribeiro opted to allow his opponent to return to his feet rather than pursue an immediate finish.

The end came in the second round when Nurgozhay’s attempted takedown backfired. Ribeiro expertly countered with a kimura, securing the submission victory at 1:28 of the round.

For Ribeiro, the victory maintained his undefeated record, while Nurgozhay’s UFC debut will be remembered not only for the loss but also for the unusual pre-fight water-spitting incident that preceded it.
