Aand a mongoose engaged in a vicious battle on the tarmac of an Indian airport, causing a significant delay in a flight’s departure.
The incident, which was captured on video from the plane’s window, unfolded at the Jay Prakash Narayan Airport in Patna, Bihar. As the aircraft was preparing for takeoff, the pilot spotted the two creatures locked in a fierce combat on the runway, forcing the flight to delay its departure.
The video footage shows the cobra striking at the lightning-fast mongoose, as the latter skillfully dodges the venomous fangs. The match appears evenly matched until reinforcements arrive in the form of two additional mongooses, who rush to their comrade’s aid, tipping the scales in the mammals’ favor.
Mongooses are known for their natural resistance to cobra venom and their superior reflexes, which typically give them an advantage in these types of confrontations. Experts estimate that mongooses win between 75% to 80% of their fights with cobras.
These interspecies battles are not uncommon in the wild, where the two species compete for the same prey and also prey on each other. Cobras are known to target baby mongooses, while the mongooses hunt and consume adult cobras, often by biting them on the back of the head.
The iconic rivalry between mongooses and cobras has been immortalized in literature, most notably in Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 short story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” where a brave mongoose defends his human master against a menacing cobra.
While the outcome of the tarmac clash remains unclear, the incident serves as a reminder of the captivating and often unpredictable encounters that can unfold in the natural world, even in the most unexpected of places.
