In an insightful exchange, legendary mixed martial artist and kickboxer Bas Rutten imparted valuable knowledge to Hafthor Bjornsson, the former Game of Thrones actor turned boxer. The focus of their discussion centered around the devastating kick that propelled Superlek Kiatmoo9 to victory over Takeru Segawa at ONE 165.
Rutten, known for his technical prowess and analytical mind, broke down the intricacies of the low kick that proved pivotal in Superlek’s successful title defense. With his trademark enthusiasm, he explained, “You see when I’m fighting, I pick a logo that they have on their pants. For instance, I see the difference between this part and this part. I will be kicking here the whole time the same thing.”
Emphasizing the importance of targeting a specific area, Rutten demonstrated a gentle kick to Bjornsson, illustrating the impact it can have. “I’ll give you a really gentle one, so you feel what it does to you,” he said. “If you do this, like my last fight, I had a guy who was 265 pounds. I gave him three kicks and he dropped. So it’s a very strong weapon to throw at somebody.”
Rutten’s wisdom underscored the strategic significance of relentlessly attacking the same spot. “But the trick is, of course, to kick the same spot, because if I need three kicks to take somebody down, but the first I hit here, now I hit here, then I hit here, I’m going to need nine shots. So if I just focus closely on that same spot, I go straight into the muscle.”
As Bjornsson followed Rutten’s guidance, the legendary star observed, “You’re going to make a circle. Yeah, that’s it. There we go. Keep driving through it, like the actual we’re talking about, the lily. Boom, that’s the one. So you move, you feel that now when you shin, right? Yeah, that’s a good kick. Good. A little bit more middle of the shin.”
This isn’t Hafthor’s first excursion into the world of MMA, previously he had a grappling session with ADCC gold medalist Gordon Ryan.
