MMA legend Bas Rutten recently opened up about his journey from a bullied child to a martial arts icon, revealing how childhood adversity shaped his MMA career. Speaking on Mike Perry’s podcast, Rutten shared his experiences with severe health issues and relentless bullying, which ultimately led him to discover his passion for martial arts.
Childhood Struggles
As a young boy growing up in the Netherlands, Rutten faced significant health challenges. “I had horrible skin disease and really bad asthma,” he explained. The severity of his skin condition was such that he had to wear gloves, earning him the cruel nickname “the leper” from his classmates.
These health issues made Rutten an easy target for bullies. “Kids bullied me a lot,” he recalled, describing the constant torment he endured due to his appearance.
Discovering Martial Arts
A turning point came when Rutten, at age 14, watched a Bruce Lee movie. Inspired by Lee’s prowess, Rutten realized that martial arts could be his path to standing up against his tormentors. He began training, and his natural talent quickly became apparent. Within just two months, Rutten had progressed to adult classes.
Confronting the Bullies
Rutten’s newfound skills were soon put to the test. In a defining moment, he confronted the biggest bully in his school. “I knocked him out but his nose was broke in the process,” Rutten said. This incident led to police involvement and his parents temporarily banning him from martial arts training.
However, Rutten had discovered his fighting ability and wasn’t about to stop. He made a list of his tormentors and systematically confronted them. “I started making the list and start going after every bully in school,” he revealed. “And then the kids who got bullied by other bullies, I would take care of that problem as well.”
From Bullied Child to MMA Legend
Rutten’s journey from a sickly, bullied child to a UFC Hall of Famer is a testament to the transformative power of martial arts. He credits those early struggles for shaping his legendary career. “I wanted to thank them,” he said of his former bullies. “They gave me this beautiful life that I’m having right now and it’s all because of them.”
Today, at 59, Rutten remains passionate about fitness and breathing techniques. He advocates for inspiratory muscle training to help fighters and others improve their endurance and lung capacity, drawing from his own experience of overcoming asthma through breathing exercises.

Bas Rutten’s story serves as an inspiration to anyone facing childhood struggles or health issues. His journey demonstrates how adversity, when channeled into positive pursuits, can spark greatness.
