(Video) Khabib shows how to escape Makhachev’s arm triangle

There was a lot of build up in lead up to UFC 280 thanks to the long standing rivalry between sambo and bjj. Many UFC vets out there vouched for the now former lightweight champion including bjj champion Gilbert Burns who ended up losing $50,000 in a wager with his manager.

While there are a lot of people admiring Makhachev’s quick submission of Oliveira not many people out there are discussing some finer points.

The submission Makhachev applied is an interesting one – an arm triangle. But even more interesting is the fact that Makhachev finished it from half-guard and the so called ‘wrong-side’.

Now Khabib is showing an escape from the same choke and you can see how it varies from the typical arm- triangle escape.

Nurmagomedov uses his elbow to frame against the head of his opponent and create extra space to allow for breathing room. Instead of leaving it at that you point the elbow toward the floor and basically target to not be flat on your back.

Gracie family once drew a parallels between this choke an von flue as opposed to typical arm triangle – which one finishes from side control or knee on belly.

“This is more of a modified Von Flue choke than a modified arm-triangle”.

Makhachev is pleased with his performance regardless and even went so far as to promise a fan who broke his TV watching the event a replacement.

Makhachev saw the clip and ended up posting on his instagram about it:

Makhachev offered to buy the fan a new TV writing in Russian “And from me, a new TV” .

“I always like to finish my opponents. Right now, Dana White is giving me a new contract he I have in the contract. If I finish like doesn’t matter how they give me a bonus $15,000 the not like they give all fighters like performance of night or other bonus but I have in my account, in my contract, if I finish, they give me bonus.” Makhachev previously explained
