Former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman decided to surprise several unsuspecting fans who had been expressing doubts about his MMA future.
The “Nigerian Nightmare,” who made history in 2019 as the first African star to claim a UFC title, has faced significant challenges in recent years. After losing his championship to Leon Edwards via a late fifth-round knockout—marking his first defeat in the UFC—Usman has struggled to reclaim his former dominance.
His subsequent rematch with Edwards ended in another loss via majority decision, followed by another majority decision defeat against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 in October 2023. These setbacks have led many fans to question whether Usman could ever return to championship form.
In a video that has now gone viral, Usman listened from behind the scenes as fans candidly shared their opinions about his future prospects—unaware that the former champion was about to confront them face-to-face.
When asked about Usman’s chances of reclaiming the title, one fan bluntly stated,
“Kamaru, honestly bro, I don’t think we’re ever becoming champ again. Sorry.”
The reactions when Usman revealed himself were priceless. Some fans were visibly shocked, while others awkwardly tried to backtrack on their critical comments. One particular fan named Dylan, however, stood firm in his assessment even when face-to-face with the former champion.
“Dylan, you don’t think I’m gonna be champ again, huh?” Usman asked.
“We’ll see, we’ll see,” Dylan responded confidently.
Rather than taking offense, Usman seemed to appreciate the young fan’s honesty, telling him,
“Wow, standing on business, huh? Alright, well I appreciate that.”
Usman has been open about the challenges he’s faced since losing his title. On social media, he recently addressed criticism about his comeback efforts:
“I dared to be great and fell short. Sometimes this is the journey of life. I prey [sic] I never complain about the cards I’ve been dealt for I have been blessed beyond my wildest dreams.”
Despite his recent setbacks, Usman remains active in the UFC scene and has expressed interest in facing Belal Muhammad, fueled by an ongoing feud between the stars. However, he has notably declined callouts from several up-and-coming contenders, including Ian Machado Garry, Shavkat Rakhmonov, and Joaquin Buckley.
As the 36-year-old prepares for what could be his final championship run, many in the MMA community are watching closely to see if the Nigerian Nightmare can once again rise to the top of the welterweight division.
