At UFC 280, Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev competed for the coveted lightweight title.
Much was made about the rivalry between the two in lead up to the event. There were even speculations that Oliveira might not show up for UFC 280 – published by Khabib Nurmagomedov.
And indeed, despite claiming he agreed with the UFC that he should come a month ahead of the clash to aclimate to Abu Dhabi, Oliveira was no show until the week of the event.
Suffice to say that the ending was rather crushing for Oliveira, who ended up tapping out at the start of round 2 after Makhachev applied a modified arm triangle.
UFC has published a previously unseen video of the aftermath of Oliveira being defeated at the hands of Makhachev. Oliveira is seen in the video being comforted by his crew as he is visibly upset.
The Brazilian was determined to recover the title that many believed belonged to him going into the bout against Islam Makhachev. Oliveira was competing for the vacant belt due to a scale snafu he suffered in lead up to UFC 274 against Justin Gaethje.

Another interesting to note is how excited Khabib Nurmagomedov was for his longtime friend. He could hardly contain the excitement and ended up jumping the cage because he couldn’t wait for UFC security to open it.
When all was said and done Nurmagomedov wished more people would respect Makhachev for his biggest win to date – something he likened to treatment he was getting when he faced off against Justin Gaethje in his retirement bout.
