(Video) Cub Swanson suffers leg kick TKO in bantamweight debut

In the co-main event of UFC Vegas 62, Cub Swanson made his bantamweight debut against Jonathan Martinez. Martinez gained control of the bout in the closing moments of the first round after beginning on an equal footing. He went on to earn a stunning knockout in round two.

Martinez responded to a couple of solid leg kicks from Swanson on the outside by delivering a few of his own. Martinez recovered quickly from the veteran’s double leg takedown and even acquired side control.

Martinez executed a flush combination before delivering a devastating knee to the head to knock Swanson out. Swanson momentarily recovered his balance before being again knocked down by Martinez with a knee to the body. The veteran was then hit hard by Martinez, but he was stopped by the bell as he covered up.

Swanson was still feeling groggy from the beating as the second round began. Swanson was able to climb back to his feet after Martinez immediately brought the fight to the ground and attempted to end it.

With about a minute remaining in the round, Martinez delivered a vicious leg kick that knocked Swanson to the ground. The 38-year-old was clearly wounded when Martinez delivered another leg kick, which effectively ended the bout. At the 4:19 mark of round two, just one follow-up shot was necessary for referee Herb Dean to intervene.

Cub Swanson is a real veteran of the sport who joined the UFC when it took over the WEC. He boasts victories against fighters like Dustin Poirier and Charles Oliveira.

The 38-year-harsh old’s finish by Jonathan Martinez in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 62 understandably demoralized fans. Even though they sympathized with Swanson, they could not ignore Martinez’s outstanding performance.

@nikolasdiallo tweeted: “Johnathan Martinez just broke Cub Swanson’s spirit and body down. Damn, that was technical work right there!”

Others pointed out that the veteran’s leg had previously sustained harm due to an earlier ACL injury.

Another fan tweeted: “Cub Swanson? Billy, his legs are gone. He’s been fighting for us since the Bush Administration. Why do you like him for the co-main?”
