UFC featherweight contender Brian Ortega recently found himself facing off against Korean veteran Kim Dong-hyun, better known as ‘Stun Gun.’ He was invited in an impromptu grappling session at a Los Angeles training facility.
The encounter came about almost by chance during Kim Dong-hyun’s training trip to LA with fellow Korean fighters. Originally planning to visit Kings MMA for training, the group received an unexpected opportunity when a sparring partner dropped out at the last minute. Coach Foy quickly arranged for the Korean competitors to meet at Gracie Gym, where Ortega was conducting his training camp.
What started as a simple training session quickly escalated into something more significant when Ortega agreed to grapple with the visiting Korean competitors. The timing proved perfect, as Ortega was deep in preparation for an upcoming match and welcomed the chance to work with skilled international talent. The training session took place on the traditional green mats of the Gracie Gym.
The grappling exchange showcased the technical skills of both contenders, though in markedly different ways. Ortega, known for his exceptional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills and submission expertise, demonstrated the methodical precision that has made him one of the most dangerous grapplers in the featherweight division.
Kim Dong-hyun, despite being primarily known for his striking during his UFC career, proved to be a formidable grappling partner. The Korean veteran’s experience and adaptability were on full display as he worked through various positions with the highly-regarded submission specialist.
Perhaps the most telling moment came when Ortega applied his signature guillotine choke. The submission attempt was so technically sound and precisely applied that it demonstrated why Ortega is considered one of the elite grapplers in mixed martial arts.
