(Video) Boxer Gervonta Davis says he’s always pissed because he’s short

Boxing star Gervonta “Tank” Davis recently opened up about his height insecurity ahead of his upcoming title defense against Frank Martin. Despite being an undefeated world champion at just 29 years old, Davis admits his short stature is a source of constant frustration.

Height has long been tied to perceptions of masculinity and attractiveness, leading many men to feel insecure if they don’t meet conventional height standards. Davis revealed that his always-angry demeanor stems directly from being a shorter fighter.

“Why can’t you be the calm and quiet Gervonta Davis? Why do you have that chip on your shoulder? The anger…” an interviewer asked the hard-hitting lightweight champion. Davis responded bluntly, “Uh, maybe because I’m short.”

At 5’5″, Davis is relatively short for a boxer, especially in the higher weight classes. However, he has turned his lack of height into a strength, using his low center of gravity and incredible quickness to overwhelm taller opponents.

Davis holds the WBA “regular” lightweight title and has made three successful defenses. His last outing was a knockout victory over Ryan Garcia in April 2023. Now he puts his belt on the line again on June 15, 2024, facing unbeaten Frank Martin at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

While some fighters might make excuses about their physical stature, Davis owns his height and uses the insecurity he feels about it as fuel. His fearsome punching power and tenacious attitude have made him a must-see attraction despite being vertically challenged.
