Ugas suffers fractured eye in Spence Jr loss, rushed to ER

Professional welterweight boxer Yordenis Ugas suffered a scary eye injury during a title unification bout against Errol Spence Jr this past weekend.

Yordenis Ugas was controlling the flow of the match in the starting round, making Spence lag behind. Surprisingly, Spence managed to turn the tide and dominated Ugas from the second to the fifth round. In the sixth round, Ugas managed to resist the pressure and almost knocked out Spence.

Sadly for Ugas, in the tenth round he received a combination of punches that compromised his eye. The referee stopped the match and Errol Spence Jr was announced as the winner via technical knockout.

Yordenis Ugas was sent to the hospital right after the match ended to receive medical attention. Recently, Ugas revealed that he suffered a fractured right orbital. The injury was pretty bad to the point that the doctors weren’t sure what the best treatment was.

“I have a fracture in my eye and in the next few days the doctors will say how they will treat it. I spent all morning in a hospital and I write these words with only one eye, the other is still closed.” Ugas said.

The 35-year-old Cuban boxer also recalled the match. Even though he suffered such a gruesome injury, he insisted that he would have won if the referee didn’t stop him.

“The referee stopped the fight, but I wanted to keep going to the end. I definitely had a chance to win the fight in the sixth round, but he recuperated well.” Ugas added.

With this last match, Ugas lost his WBA welterweight title and marked his 5th professional boxing loss.

As for Errol Spence Jr, he kept his record clean with a total of 28 victories. He is currently holding the WBC, IBF, and WBA welterweight titles. He aimed to box Terence Crawford who is holding the WBO title. He called out Crawford after his match with Ugas.

“Everybody knows who I want next, I want Terence Crawford next. That’s the fight that I want, that’s the fight everybody else wants. Terence, I’m coming for that motherf*****g belt.” Spence said.
