UFC’s Neil Magny surprised with black belt after TKO win

UFC veteran Neil Magny received an unexpected and emotional surprise following his TKO victory at UFC Vegas 108. During the post bout presser, Magny was with his birthday cake talking to the media when he was presented with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt.

The welterweight contender dominated his opponent in the second round, showcasing the ground game that ultimately earned him the prestigious black belt recognition. After being taken down early in the match, Magny demonstrated his improved grappling skills by working effectively from his back before eventually reversing position and securing the finish.

“It feels great. I mean, anytime you get any kind of token of appreciation for hard work, I mean, it always feels good to get that reward,” Magny said during the post-bout press conference, clearly moved by the surprise presentation.

The victory marked Magny’s 23rd UFC win, placing him in elite company alongside Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira, and Andrei Arlovski. More significantly, it represented his first victory in over a year, ending a difficult stretch in his career.

“I’ve literally been over a year since I sat up here with you guys after a win from a fight,” Magny reflected, expressing gratitude for the moment.

The black belt presentation held special meaning for the veteran contender, representing over two decades of dedication to martial arts. “This is literally 20 plus years in the making to get to this point. I mean, if I had known that some high school kid training in the back of Indiana somewhere would be a black belt fighting for the UFC 20 years later, I would have never thought it,” he explained.

Despite losing the first round, he remained patient, knowing he needed to “set the pace early and eventually find a way to break him in the fight.” His persistence paid off in the second round when he capitalized on openings, ultimately finishing the fight with ground strikes.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, as Magny celebrated his birthday just hours after the fight. Rather than partying in Las Vegas, the father expressed his eagerness to return home to his children, emphasizing his priorities outside the octagon.

“It’s getting back to my kids as soon as possible. I mean, I’ve been away from them all week. Miss those little guys,” he said.

The combination of the victory and birthday celebration created what he described as a moment of pure gratitude.
