UFC lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan has sparked conversation with his recent comments about why his mother won’t be attending his upcoming fight in Qatar, revealing the deeply personal and protective dynamics within his family.
During a recent interview, Tsarukyan was asked about his mother’s absence from what promises to be a significant moment in his career. His response offered insight into both his traditional values and his concern for his mother’s well-being.
“My mother, no she’s gonna stay home,” Tsarukyan explained. “It’s a men’s sport you know, woman should be at home.”
When pressed to elaborate on his reasoning, the Armenian-born MMA star provided a more nuanced explanation that centered on his protective instincts toward his mother. The 27-year-old competitor expressed genuine concern about exposing his mother to the intense and often brutal nature of mixed martial arts competition.
“I don’t know how my mom can come and watch my fight and it’s a you know a lot of blood sure her son can get hurt you know it’s I think it’s not a good place,”
Tsarukyan said, his voice carrying the weight of someone who understands the physical toll his profession can take.
The lightweight’s comments reveal a striking contrast between his fierce persona inside the octagon and his tender consideration for his mother’s emotional state. Rather than simply keeping her away due to traditional gender roles, Tsarukyan appears motivated by a desire to shield her from the anxiety and distress of watching her son compete in such a physically demanding sport.
This protective approach extends beyond just live attendance. When asked whether his mother watches his competitions on television, Tsarukyan revealed that she actively avoids viewing his matches altogether.
“No she doesn’t, she’s just waiting for the result and after that maybe just she’s just waiting when when I’m fighting she’s just waiting for the result,” he shared. “She can’t watch.”
While his initial statement about women staying at home may raise eyebrows in contemporary discussions about gender roles, the fuller context suggests his position stems more from familial protectiveness than rigid traditionalism.
The lightweight contender’s approach reflects a broader reality faced by many combat sports athletes whose family members struggle with the nature of their profession. Some parents, spouses and children of MMA stars choose to distance themselves from the sport’s more graphic elements while still providing emotional support from afar.
