UFC Star Yair Rodriguez Speaks Out Against Diego Lopes Representing Mexico and Brazil

During the UFC 314 Media Day, Mexican featherweight contender Yair Rodriguez addressed the controversy surrounding native Brazilian Diego Lopes representing Mexico in the octagon.

Rodriguez, who has been a proud representative of Mexico throughout his UFC career, expressed his disagreement with Lopes adopting Mexican nationality for his professional persona.

“I have been living in the US for over 10 years… I love this country because it gave me the opportunity to have a job… but not because of that I’m gonna say I’m American. I’m not, I’m Mexican. I’m proud of it,” Rodriguez stated firmly.

The comments come amid growing discussion about nationality and representation in the UFC, with some athletes choosing to represent countries based on heritage, training location, or strategic marketing decisions.

Rodriguez continued, “I just don’t agree with [Diego representing Mexico]. I will never be that way, and I don’t want to be that way…”

The 31-year-old Rodriguez has been one of Mexico’s most prominent UFC stars, competing at the highest levels of the featherweight division. His passion for representing his home country was evident as he addressed the situation.

“I have been killing myself for over the last 10 years for my country. If they decide to go with [Diego] if we have to face each other, that’s on them,” Rodriguez added.

This statement hints at a potential matchup between the two fighters, which would certainly carry additional significance given the nationality controversy.

While Lopes has not directly responded to Rodriguez’s comments, the situation highlights the complex dynamics of national identity and representation in international combat sports.

As UFC 314 approaches, fans will be watching to see if this disagreement develops into a more significant rivalry between the two competitors.
