The recent breakup between UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira and flyweight contender Tracy Cortez has sparked speculation that their entire relationship was nothing more than a publicity stunt, according to commentary from the Overdogs USA podcast.
During a recent episode featuring Mike Perry and Joaquin Buckley, the pair discussed how quickly the high-profile UFC couple called it quits, with Perry having predicted the split before it happened.
“I told Mike last week, I said, ‘Mark my words, before the next UFC card, Alex Pereira and Tracy Cortez will break up,'” recalled co-host Matt. “It took like three days.”
Buckley offered an interesting perspective on the situation, suggesting the relationship may have been strategic from the start.
“I don’t know how real it was though, right? You got to realize it’s entertainment business, right? And both their numbers went up,” Buckley observed.
Perry agreed with the assessment, noting that such arrangements are common in Hollywood. “That’s good business. You know what I’m saying? We all out here just trying to live it up, have a good time, and take care of responsibilities,” Perry said. “They doing it in Hollywood all the time.”
Buckley doubled down on the publicity stunt theory, stating that both contenders benefited from the increased attention.
The relationship between Pereira and Cortez raised eyebrows from the beginning, particularly given a viral video showing Cortez waking Pereira on a plane and telling him they were getting married.
Perry joked that Pereira was likely “working on the breakup text right there.”
