UFC signs MMA star who spent 10 years on the run for crime he didn’t commit

A remarkable story of redemption has emerged in the world of mixed martial arts as Shem Rock, the Liverpool-born man who spent a decade as a fugitive for a crime he didn’t commit, has officially signed with the UFC.

Rock’s journey to the octagon began under the most unlikely circumstances. As a teenager caught up with the wrong crowd, he was arrested in connection with an aggravated burglary. Despite maintaining his innocence throughout, Rock was accidentally released on bail. When his solicitor called requesting his return to custody, the young Scouser made a life-altering decision – he fled the UK and headed to Asia.

“It did shape me and I am grateful for the path I’ve been on, but the system has done things it shouldn’t have done now to a young teenager,”

Rock reflected on his experience with the judicial system.

His first year on the run was spent in Thailand, but it was during a visa renewal trip to Singapore that Rock’s life took an unexpected turn. Walking past a large building, he became captivated by people training on mats for 45 minutes. Months later, back in Malaysia, he discovered a sign for Brazilian jiu-jitsu and realized he had witnessed the martial art that would change his destiny.

Rock’s introduction to jiu-jitsu was memorable for all the wrong reasons. During his first training session, his confrontational nature got the better of him when he slammed his coach on his head while trying to escape a submission hold.

“He just f***ed me up, the first thing he did was triangle choke me. I picked him up and slammed him, it was the worst thing I ever did in my life,”

Rock recalled.

“After that, he must have tapped me out about 60 times. I remember going home and scratching my head for two hours thinking ‘Was that real life?’ I went back that night for the evening class and after that went every day for three weeks straight.”

Despite the rocky start, Rock’s dedication to the sport paid off. He compiled an impressive 6-1 MMA record during his time abroad before eventually being captured and facing the prospect of 12 years in prison upon his return to England.

Justice finally prevailed when Rock was found not guilty in a trial that lasted just 20 minutes, after being held on remand for six months. The Scouser admits he still harbors resentment toward the judicial system for what he endured, but his ordeal ultimately led him to discover his calling in mixed martial arts.

Following his exoneration, Rock established himself as one of Europe’s premier MMA talents, competing for OKTAGON, one of the continent’s leading promotions. His recent performance against the No. 6 ranked Attila Korkmaz in Munich demonstrated his championship caliber, earning a split decision victory on short notice.

“I felt like I was in control from start to finish and never in any danger. I won all three rounds, but I’m in Germany facing a German so I’m not surprised it was a split decision,”

Rock told Frontkick in an exclusive interview.

Rock’s confidence in his abilities remains unwavering as he prepares for the next chapter of his career.

“I beat a 25-bout professional veteran on six days notice after going through three opponents and I did it quite comfortably. Korkmaz is ranked at No. 6 in the promotion. The champ has ran to featherweight and the former champ has ran to welterweight. I’m the best in the division, there’s no question about that, pal.”

The UFC’s decision to sign Rock comes as part of a significant European recruitment drive, with the promotion also adding Croatian heavyweight Ante Delija and Polish prospects Jakub Wiklacz and Robert Ruchala to their roster.

For Rock, the UFC contract represents the culmination of an extraordinary journey from fugitive to professional athlete. His story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the unexpected paths life can take. From watching martial artists train through a window in Singapore to competing on mixed martial arts’ biggest stage, Rock’s transformation from a teenager on the run to a UFC contender is nothing short of remarkable.
